Batticaloa ( Tamil : மட்டக்களப்பு, Sinhala : මඩකලපුව) is the capital of the district of the same name in the east of Sri Lanka and is located on the Bay of Bengal. The name means "muddy lagoon" in Sinhala.
history
The earliest historical artifacts are a dagaba and chatra from the Ruhuna kingdom of King Kavantissa (1st century BC) found in the Dutch fortress (built in the seventeenth century). Many archaeological sites dating back to pre-Christian times have been found in this area. Lankavihara, Roththa (Roththai) Temple, Kinnaragala, Rahathgala (Shanthamalai), Veheragalkanda (Pulukunai), Eluvamulla (Pullumuilai) and Taaththon Kovil, are some of these sites that have been proven by archaeological research. Batticaloa Fortress was built by the Portuguese in 1628 and was the first to be captured by the Dutch (May 18, 1638). It is one of the most picturesque of the small Dutch fortresses in Sri Lanka, is located on an island and is still in good condition. Near Batticaloa, the Portuguese had a tiny fortress on Tanavare (it is marked on a map, but there are no remains of it.) The Buddhist Dagaba from the first century AD is inside the Dutch fortress. Batticaloa was later developed by the British; it provided services to Sri Lanka during the British rule. In the 20th century it became an important administrative center and capital of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Batticaloa has been the seat of the Batticaloa diocese, which emerged from the Trincomalee-Batticaloa diocese, since 2012 .

economy
The city on the east coast of Sri Lanka has many beaches and many small harbors. They are also known for a unique species of fish called the "singing fish" as they are able to produce a melody. Batticaloa has a broad-based agricultural, fishing and dairy economy, as well as diverse arts and crafts industries.
The Batticaloa airport is located about 1.7 kilometers southwest of the town on the island Thimilathiu . It was opened in 1958, but there were no civil flight connections between 1979 and 2018. After a thorough renovation, the airport has been operational again since March 25, 2018. The Sri Lankan government is aiming to develop it into an airport for international air traffic. So far (2020) there are no international flight connections.
