As Bauchbehaarung is vellus or terminal hair expression in the abdominal region in mammals including humans called. In all mammals, it follows the same growth pattern from the sternum towards the navel and from the pubic region or genitals also towards the navel. In animals, the abdominal hair is part of the fur .

Humans have had abdominal hair since birth, but initially only in the form of vellus hair. In men, terminal hair develops from the vellus hair during and after puberty through hormonal processes. Occasionally women can also be affected ( hirsutism ).
