Building under the rolling wheel (also known as building under traffic ) describes a construction process in railway and road construction in which construction work is carried out while maintaining traffic. This form of construction is always used when, due to the importance of the traffic route, there is no possibility of completely closing the construction area to traffic and setting up a diversion or a replacement rail service. This usually applies to motorways and long-distance rail connections. A compromise often practiced in road construction is the use of 4 + 0 traffic routing .

Building with traffic places special demands on both the construction process and site management. The primary goal is to ensure the highest level of work and road safety. For this purpose, special attention is paid to comprehensive job security. The division into several construction or traffic phases is also characteristic of building under traffic. This often also requires the production (and dismantling) of temporary structures and construction aids (e.g. auxiliary bridges).

In terms of construction, adjustments to this construction method are also necessary (multi-shift operation or weekend and holiday work). Increased night-time activity is typical, especially for track construction sites, since in this way work that causes greater obstruction to traffic can be carried out due to a lower volume of traffic. In addition, the construction process can be accelerated through night work.

Building under traffic requires a sometimes significantly longer construction time compared to construction sites that are completed with a full closure. The difficulties in the construction, the complex traffic safety and the construction of temporary structures have a significant influence on the construction costs.
