Bauer (instrument maker)

Bauer († after 1786 ) was a German piano and instrument maker in Berlin .

Live and act

His first name is unknown. He was possibly a relative of Andreas Bauer († 1719) and Johann Gottfried Bauer († 1721), who were flute makers in Leipzig. In 1786, Bauer was court advisor and castellan of the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (II. Or III.)

He invented two types of fort pianos . One he called a crescendo . It was pyramidal in shape , had five octaves and three trains that could be operated with the foot. So eight changes in tone were possible. By moving the keyboard the instrument could be transposed 1 or 2 notes higher. The Royal Crescendo was built like a piano, four feet long and 16½ inches deep. It had a flute function from c 1 to f³ and six possibilities for change.

Bauer built music boxes in Berlin and sold a flute clock in 1769 to King Friedrich II of Prussia for the Sanssouci Palace and in 1784 one for the Tsarina Catherine II of Russia for 3,000 rubles .
