Polluted road in harvest time

Bauer ice or farmer smoothness is in Germany a colloquial term for slippery roads caused by agricultural or forestry contamination of the roadway caused. The phenomenon occurs mainly in autumn during the harvest time .

Description, occurrence, avoidance

So-called farm ice occurs when agricultural vehicles, such as tractors , move from the fields to paved roads. The road surface is often soiled by clods of clay or earth hanging in the coarse tires or on the attachments of the agricultural machinery, by straw or other harvested products. If this pollution is then wet from rain or fog, a film of lubricant forms on the road, which has a similar effect to black ice and increases the risk of accidents . Depending on the weather and harvest time, this type of slipperiness occurs mainly in autumn and in rural areas. The police and automobile clubs regularly warn car and motorcyclists in particular about the dangers of farm ice.

In general, it applies to every vehicle that "the driver has to remove large amounts of soil that are stuck to a vehicle, especially on its wheels, before driving onto a dust-free road", i.e. without restrictions or special features also for tractors, harvesting machines and the like agricultural vehicles. In this regard, for example, the right choice of tire profile is recommended depending on the condition of the grassland or field. The falling of parts of the load generally falls under load securing and applies in agriculture as well as with construction site vehicles and other bulk goods transports. Avoidance of this includes in particular the structural equipment or subsequently attached transport nets and the like, not to overfill the device and a check for loss of cargo on the part of the transporter.

Legal situation
