Building stone Honningsvåg
The building stone Honningsvåg is a memorial in the Norwegian town of Honningsvåg in the municipality of Nordkapp . It was built to commemorate the community's residents who were killed in World War II .
It is located west of Honningsvåg Church in the center of town, on the south side of Kirkegata .
Design and history
The monument was in the form of standing on a pedestal Bautasteins built and is increased to a three-stage pedestal. On the east side of the stone is a plaque with the names of 59 children, women and men from the community who fell victim to the Second World War. The monument is surrounded by a frame made of a chain stretched between posts.
A building stone committee was founded to erect the monument. The inauguration of the monument took place on Sunday, July 12, 1953. In the morning, Pastor Nils A. Eidem first held a memorial service, in which the Honningsvåg men's choir also took part. The celebrations for the actual inauguration then took place in bright sunshine from 5 p.m. Before 1,500 people appeared the Honningsvåger Musikverein played the Marche Funebre by Chopin . The chairman of the Erling Johannessen committee gave a speech, followed by a vocal performance by the men's choir. The Norwegian Foreign Minister Halvard Lange then carried out the inauguration. This was followed by the handover of the monument to the municipality and the laying of wreaths.
The music association then played Norge, mitt Norge! . Finally, everyone sang the Norwegian national anthem Yes, vi elsker dette lands accompanied by brass music .
