The building sealer (formerly adhesive sealer , in Austria also Schwarzdecker ) professionally produces protective seals for all types of buildings and carries out maintenance work on the seal. The sealing of structures is necessary to prevent surface water and groundwater from entering the external components and thus to avoid structural damage .
The occupation is part of the construction related trade and is learned with the help of several years of training. Employment is the Bauwerksabdichter at companies in high- and civil engineering , which are involved in the development of buildings or to the sealing of bridge or tunnel structures.

One of the main tasks of the structural sealer is the application of sealing materials ( bitumen welding sheets , plastic sealing sheets , paints and insulating materials). For this purpose, the building materials are processed either by hand with glue / solvent welding agents or with the help of devices such as gas burners . The workplaces are versatile and can be in the area of building sealing or in tunnel and bridge construction. Most of the waterproofing measures in building construction are carried out in the area of the basement or on the ( flat ) roof. The subsequent greening of the flat roof can also be added to the range of tasks. In civil engineering, the structural sealer has the task of protecting traffic structures and hydraulic structures from the ingress of moisture.
