Bauza Island is an elongated, uninhabited island in the Southland region in the south of New Zealand's South Island . It is located in Doubtful Sound and leaves only two passages open: to the south the Patea Passage between the island and the mainland, to the north the Te awaatu Channel , which separates Bauza Island from Secretary Island . Bauza Island is about 5.5 km long and about 1.5 km north-south. To the east of the island, the Doubtful Sound extends further inland as Malaspina Reach . The island is part of the Fiordland National Park . In front of the island in the west is the small group of Shelter Islands .
