The island has an approximately triangular floor plan with the corners of Common Head (eastern tip), Colonial Head (northern tip) and the unnamed western tip. It is separated from the mainland by Doubtful Sound to the south and Thompson Sound to the north, which meet at Common Head in Pendulo Reach . The west coast borders the Tasman Sea . The steeply rising island reaches a height of 1200 m with an area of 81 km². It is uninhabited. The closest larger island is Bauza Island in the south.
