Bazooka (chewing gum)

bazooka

Bazooka is the trade name of a chewing gum made by the American manufacturer Topps Company .

In addition to the pink color of the chewing gum composition, it is characterized above all by the intensely sweet taste, especially popular with children, based on the aromas of the wintergreen shrub , which is achieved during production by flavoring with wintergreen oil (although artificially produced as a so-called nature - identical aroma ) .

The manufacturing company began making this product during World War II , which in its blue, white and red packaging is reminiscent of the US national colors. American patriotism is therefore always associated with the bazooka gum . Production takes place in Mexico today.

The bazooka gum was also available in Europe until the 1990s and was a well-known branded product, but is rarely found today. In Germany it was sold by the August Storck company until the end of the 1980s , whose license agreement with the Topps company then expired and was no longer renewed.

The packaging also traditionally includes a small comic strip with the main character Bazooka Joe . In Germany this was replaced in the 1970s and 1980s by cartoons about the character Schleck , drawn by Riccardo Rinaldi .

The name of the chewing gum is said to be derived from the musical instrument bazooka , which was developed by Bob Burns in the 1920s . The term bazooka is also used for the kazoo , also a musical instrument, and for an American anti-tank rifle .
