The Tunisian Academy of Science, Literature and Art ( Arabic المجمع التونسي للعلوم والآداب والفنون, DMG Maǧmaʿ at-Tūnisī li-l-ʿulūm wa-l-ādāb wa-l-funūn , French Académie tunisienne des sciences, des lettres et des arts ), also Beit al-Hikma ( Arabic مؤسسة بيت الحكمة, DMG Muʾassasat Bait al-Ḥikma  'Foundation ›House of Wisdom‹') is a Tunisian academy of humanities and natural sciences founded in 1992 . It is based in the Palais Zarrouk in the Carthage suburb of the capital Tunis . The Academy President has been Abdelmajid Charfi since 2015 .

history

Today's Beit al-Hikma is the successor to the National Foundation for Translation, Texts and Studies, established in 1983. In July 2012, a reorganization and the formation of a science council took place, whose members are appointed for life. The academy is divided into the sections for mathematics and natural sciences, human and social sciences, Islamic studies, literature and art. It is composed of 50 full members living in Tunisia, 10 members living outside Tunisia, 15 corresponding members and 5 Tunisian honorary members.

tasks

The focus is on the Arabic language and the preservation of cultural assets. Beit al-Hikma is now one of the most important publishers and editors of scientific literature and university publications in Tunisia, creates encyclopedias, dictionaries, translations and organizes scientific conferences.
