Beate Söntgen

Beate Söntgen (* 1963 in Stolberg ) is a German art historian and professor of art history at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg .

Life

Söntgen studied art history, philosophy and modern German literature in Marburg and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1996 from the Free University of Berlin . After a postdoctoral fellowship in Frankfurt an der Oder , she worked as an assistant at the Institute for Art History at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts . 2002–2003 she was the first Laurenz professor for contemporary art at the University of Basel. From 2003–2011 she was Professor of Art History at the Ruhr University in Bochum and 2005–2008 Managing Director of the Institute of Art History. She has been Professor of Art History at Leuphana University Lüneburg since 2011. Together with Susanne Leeb, she is the scientific director of the dual training program “PriMus - Doctorate in the Museum”, which aims to improve curator training.

Söntgen's main research interests are French and German painting of the 18th and 19th centuries as well as contemporary art.
