Beatriz Sarlo (* 1942 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine journalist , writer and essayist who focuses on literary and cultural criticism .

Career

Sarlo studied at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and began to work at the publishing house Centro Editor de América Latina in the late 1970s, which was a thorn in the side of the Argentine dictatorship under Juan Carlos Onganía from the beginning. From 1972 to 1976 she was part of the editor-in-chief of Los Libros magazine. In addition, she worked from the democratic transition until 2003 as a professor of Argentine literature at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires. As a visiting professor, she also gave courses at the universities of Columbia, Berkeley, Maryland and Minnesota.

To this day, Sarlo is one of the most important intellectual voices in Latin America and places one focus of her work on the postmodernity of the subcontinent, which she dubbed "Peripheral Modernity" (modernidad periférica). The book of the same name and the work "Escenas de la vida posmodern" (excerpts from postmodern life) brought her recognition and numerous awards in the academic field. Her publication on the writer José Luis Borges also cemented this reputation.

In addition to her academic texts, her columns, which appear in relevant Argentine and Latin American cultural magazines, deal with the socio-cultural change that, according to Sarlo, is derived from both the modernity crisis and the effects of neoliberalism. Along with authors such as Néstor García Canclini, Jesús Martín Barbero or Carlos Monsiváis, she joins the ranks of important analysts of Latin American culture (s).

Together with members of the Centro Editor de América Latina publishing house, Sarlo formed the Punto de Vista (Standpunkt) group at the end of 1967, which started publishing a magazine of the same name from 1978. From 1978 to 2008, Sarlo was editor-in-chief of Punto de Vista, which dealt with new theoretical concepts within the social, cultural and literary studies. She also writes for the newspapers La Nación, Perfil and the magazine Revista Noticias.

At the beginning of 2012, Sarlo, like many other intellectuals in Argentina, signed a document that criticized the handling of the Argentine government under Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's dealings with the Falkland Islands and indicated that the inhabitants of the islands should be regarded as legal entities and that they should be heard to belittle them.

Most recently, Beatriz Sarlo criticized the government under Mauricio Macri , in particular the appointment of two judges by presidential decree.
