Beaulieu Palace House was originally built in the 13th century as the gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey. After the dissolution of the English monasteries, Sir Thomas Wriothesley, later appointed 1st Earl of Southampton , bought the property in 1538. The house came into the Montagu family by marriage and is still owned by a member of the family, Ralph Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 4th Baron Montagu of Beaulieu .

The house was expanded in the 16th century and again in the 19th century. Today it is considered a fine example of a Gothic country house. The house stands over the Beaulieu River and is surrounded by meadows and walking paths. The interior was kept in a Victorian style .

Although Lord Montagu still lives there with his family, the house and gardens are open to the public every day. It belongs to the Treasure Houses of England consortium .

Stories and legends

Beaulieu is one of the most haunted places in the UK, according to the official website. Reports of ghost sightings go back as far as 100 years, possibly as long as the mid-16th century. Numerous paranormal researchers have conducted investigations into the abbey, including Arthur Conan Doyle , who claimed he had contact with a ghost during a séance at Beaulieu Palace House.

A lady in blue or gray who is said to have been seen walking through walls in private rooms and making a lot of noise is said to be the ghost of the Countess of Beaulieu, Lady Isabella, who died in 1786. Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu , also reported on the smell of incense in a room in Beaulieu Palace House, which was used as a chapel in the Middle Ages . This smell supposedly indicates a tragedy for the residents of the abbey or the village.
