Bechan Cave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bechan Cave is the name of a cave in the US state of Utah that is of great importance for the study of the habits of mammoths .

Bechan Cave was mainly used by prairie mammoths around 15,000 years ago for a period of around 1,500 years. The cave was therefore filled with 300 cubic meters of manure. Analysis of the preserved manure showed that 95 percent of the prairie mammoths ate grass . The remains of Aphodios fossor , a species of the dung beetle genus , were also found there . This species is now extinct in North America while it is still found in Europe and Asia. It apparently disappeared in the American Southwest when the American megafauna became extinct about 14,000 years ago.
