The Begas Haus is the museum for art and regional history in Heinsberg . It was named after the Begas family of artists, who worked for four generations and whose ancestral father Carl Joseph Begas was born in Heinsberg in 1794.

Attached to the museum is also a café run by Lebenshilfe , in which art is occasionally exhibited under the motto “culture without barriers”. The Heinsberg Provost Church of St. Gangolf and Heinsberg Castle are also in the immediate vicinity .

history

After three years of renovation, the Begas House was reopened on March 12, 2014 in the premises of the former district museum. The historically significant building from the 16th to 18th centuries was also expanded to include the neighboring Lennartz House and completely redesigned both outside and inside.

Under the direction of Rita Müllejans-Dickmann , the museum was given a new profile and, in addition to the regional history of the Heinsberger Lande, now focuses primarily on the life and work of the Heinsberg artist family Begas. Since September 2019, the museum has been offering educational courses and workshops in the new area of active art . There has been a bust of Kaiser Wilhelm I since 2019 . right next to the entrance of the Begas house. It was erected on September 20, 1908 on the Heinsberg market square and removed from there in 1942. The bust has been privately owned since then and has been given to the museum on permanent loan.

Permanent exhibitions

A look at the museum's permanent exhibition.

There are two permanent exhibitions in the Begas House. On the one hand, the nationwide largest collection of paintings, sculptures and graphics by the Begas family of artists characterizes the museum; on the other hand, historical objects and documents as well as valuable Christian treasure art and furniture from the past centuries are exhibited in the regional history department and in the context of the life and work of the Begas family brought.

90 percent of the permanent exhibition comes from the museum's own holdings; other loans came from the Stadtmuseum Berlin Foundation , the Old National Gallery of the State Museums in Berlin and the Begas family archive in Düsseldorf. With the support of other donors, some new acquisitions have been added to the portfolio.
