Begaardenklooster (Roermond)
The Begaardenklooster was a convent of the Begarden in Roermond ( Limburg province ) in the Netherlands . The core of the late Gothic chapel has been preserved.
history
The sacred building was originally the chapel of a Begardenhof , which is documented for the first time in 1322. It bore the patronage of Saint Theobald. Franciscan brothers temporarily moved into the convent building in 1581 . In 1599, the sisters of the Roermond Dominican convent Maria Wee ( German: Marien Leid ) took over the chapel and the building. In 1784 the monastery was closed in the course of secularization by order of Emperor Joseph II .
The chapel was then used as a salt works until the middle of the 20th century. In 1975 the former monastery complex was extensively renovated and has been used by a Roman Catholic foundation ever since. The chapel was last renovated in 1990 and is now the Dutch Rijksmonument under number 32663.
