Beguinage Antwerp
The Beguinage (Begijnhof) in the Belgian city of Antwerp is one of the lesser-known beguinages in the Province of Antwerp . Unlike other Flemish beguinages, it is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site , but it is well preserved and an oasis of calm on Rodestraat.
The beguinage existed as Curtis Syon as early as the 13th century. It is uncertain whether the mystic Hadewijch, who may have come from Antwerp, worked there.
In 1986 the last Beguine died .
The current structural substance goes back to the 16th century. The Church of St. Catharina is a neo-Gothic building from the 19th century. Fruit trees were planted in the garden and a pond was created.
