Small beguinage ter Hoye

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Small Beguinage ter Hoye (in Flanders as Klein Begijnhof Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Hoyen or short Klein Begijnhof known) is a beguinage in the Belgian city of Ghent ; along with twelve other Flemish beguinages it belongs since 1998 to the World Heritage of UNESCO .

The first Beguine settlement was built in Ghent in 1242. This emerged from a community that had already formed in 1236. In addition to the Sint Elisabeth beguinage as the first of these facilities, the so-called small beguinage, which was not significantly different in size from the Sint Elisabeth beguinage, was built almost at the same time. It is located in the Lange Violettenstraat and has been preserved as a whole. The beguinage was first mentioned in a document in 1260.

In 1281 the building complex was completely walled. The walls shielded the facility from the environment. In the center is the associated church in the Baroque style and the cemetery of the residents. All around are the residential buildings and convent buildings. The beguines came from the lower nobility, the urban bourgeoisie and wealthy farming families. In the 17th century the complex comprised 90 wooden houses and ten convent buildings. Later the old houses were replaced by brick or stone buildings. In 1963 the facility was placed under protection. It has been renovated since 1994.
