Visually impaired or blind athletes are often in the exercise of their sport escort runners instructed. The accompanying runner, often called a guide , leads the disabled athlete along the competition course. The support runner is of particular importance in cross-country skiing and biathlon . Here he guides the visually impaired athlete through the lane with detailed announcements. Instructions are mostly given using the clockwise system . A sharp right turn is synonymous with the indication "three o'clock".
