Buried in the sand (original title: Sound of Sand ) is a manga short story by the Japanese illustrator Katsuhiro Otomo . The eight-page story first appeared in 1979.

An alien planet in the future consists entirely of quicksand. In this quicksand is an astronaut who tries in vain to free himself. His crew want to pull him out of the sand. However, the astronaut sinks into the sand and sand penetrates his suit. When the crew finally rescued him, his body in the spacesuit has disappeared and there is only sand in its place. The sand flows out of the suit and appears to be alive.

Publications

Buried in the Sand was published in Japan in the November 1979 issue of Kisōtengai magazine (奇想 天 外). In 1981 she reappeared in the manga Kisōtengai (マ ン ガ 奇想 天 外). In 1990, the Kōdansha publishing house brought out the volume Kanojo no omoide ... (彼女 の 想 い で ...), which contains Otomo's buried in the sand , among other short stories . This volume was also translated into English under the title Memories by Mandarin Paperbacks in 1994 with the assistance of Simon Jowett and Jo Duffy .

In German, Carlsen Comics brought out two volumes of short stories Otomos in 1994, Der Feuerball and Buried in the Sand . In the latter volume, besides Buried in the Sand, there are also the stories Verdeih und Verderben (1979), Memories (1980), The Mission (1981), The Breath of Old Times (1979) and Birds (1980).
