Leg press

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A leg press is a piece of fitness equipment that can be used to train the leg muscles (primarily quadriceps femoris muscles ).

The movement is a constant up and down movement of the legs. Further shifts in load can be achieved through different leg positions. A wide leg position shifts the muscle contraction towards the inner thighs ( adductors ). It is important and must be observed when using the device that the feet are not positioned inwards, but always point outwards.

There are several types of leg presses:

The 45 ° leg press consists of a trolley that can be loaded with weight plates and slides on a track inclined at 45 °. A step plate is attached to the lower end of the car. In the upper position, the carriage can be locked with a lever. The slope force acting on the step plate (see " inclined plane ") F GH after (F G (also G) = weight force , α = angle of inclination), which corresponds to the 45 ° -Press about 71% of the total weight of the car. For example, if the trolley weighs 30 kg and you add 70 kg to it, about 71 kg act on the step plate.

The horizontal leg press: The user sits upright and presses a step plate attached to a lever horizontally away from him or the step plate is rigid and the seat slides on a horizontal or only slightly inclined path and the user pushes himself away from the step plate using leg force. The weight is usually designed as a plug-in weight slide and its tensile force is transferred to the step plate or the seat by a cable, belt or flat belt. The transmission ratio is usually 1: 1, so that the force on the step plate corresponds to the weight staked.

The dual pendulum leg press: The weight discs are attached to 2 pendulums, which are deflected by means of two pedals. This enables the left and right leg to be trained separately. The counterforce increases with increasing deflection of the pendulum, so that a significantly higher force acts when the leg is extended than when the leg is bent. As a result, the force curve is better adapted to the movement than with conventional leg presses, which work with a constant counterforce.

Pendulum leg press

The leg press (often 45–60 °) is well suited for beginners because of the guided movement. Because the stabilization of the trunk allows very high loads to be moved (compared to a similar but free squat ), advanced and competitive athletes also use the device.
