Franz von Paula Gruithuisen (born March 19, 1774 at Holdberg Castle on Lech ; † June 21, 1852 in Munich ) was a German doctor and astronomer . Franz von Paula is his first name, Gruithuisen his family name.

Life

Gruithuisen's father, Petrus van de Gruithuijzen (1732–1793) came from Woensel in Noord-Brabant and was a falconer and overseer in Haltberg. The mother was Rosina Maria geb. Lederer († 1798) from Aichach .

In 1780 Gruithuisen attended grammar school in Landsberg am Lech . After training as a bader in Kaufering and / or Landsberg, he became an assistant to a field surgeon in the Imperial Army (HRR) . With him he went to the Russian-Austrian Turkish War . In 1792 he came to the court of Karl Theodor (Palatinate and Bavaria) as Heiduck . In 1793 he followed his father as the guardian and administrator of Haltberg. In 1794 he joined the elector's Hartschier corps .

From 1800 he was preparing to study at the University of Landshut . For the summer semester 1801 enrolled him there for philosophy , science and medicine . On September 2, 1808 doctorate he in Landshut for Dr. med. In the same year he became a lecturer in physics , chemistry , botany , zoonomies , anthropology , pathology , encyclopedia and the history of medicine at the rural medical school in Munich .

On July 20, 1820, he married Antonie Carolina Neuner (1796–1862) a daughter of the keeper of the Duke-Max-Burg .

On February 9, 1823 he was appointed professor of anatomy and physiology at the (rural medical) surgical school in Munich. After visiting German and other European universities on scientific trips in 1825, the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich appointed him on May 20, 1826 as an extraordinary professor of astronomy. Four years later, on June 11, 1830, he was given the chair of astronomy. There, more and more astronomical, geological and geographical research topics came to the fore. The moon and its craters as meteorite impacts were an important subject of research.

His estate is in the Bavarian State Library .

The grave of Franz Gruithuisen is located in the old southern cemetery in Munich (grave field 4 - row 2 - place 47) location . Today's pillar grave stands where a Gothic sandstone grave, created by the sculptor Johann Evangelist Riedmüller, once stood. A zinc bust of Gruithuisen from the former tomb, which Riedmüller created in 1848 while the scientist was still alive, is integrated into today's pillar grave.

His report about the “discovery of many clear traces of the lunar inhabitants” and a “colossal art building of the same”, which appeared in Karl Wilhelm Gottlob Kastner's archive for the entire theory of nature , Nuremberg 1827ff, caused a sensation . His Selenognostic Fragments in the files of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina from 1821 also received a lot of attention . He had been a member of the Leopoldina since 1819.

His idea of mechanically crumbling urinary stones has significance in the history of medicine. Jean Civiale made it a reality.
