The Beira Patrol was an operation of the British Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force to enforce a UN - embargo against Rhodesia from 1966 to 1975. After the unilateral declaration of independence Rhodesia imposed by the United Nations an oil embargo against the state. During the operation, British ships and planes patrolled the Mozambique Strait , checking oil tankers entering the port of Beira . Beira was the starting point for an oil pipeline to Rhodesia. Various British warships were involved in the operation. On April 9, 1966, the HMS Berwick brought up the Greek tanker Manuela (in other sources: Manuella ), which was transporting oil for Rhodesia, and prevented him from continuing to Beira. The blockade was undermined by the Rhodesian side by using other ports in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique and was ultimately unsuccessful. After Mozambique gained independence, the operation was discontinued.
