Chisel masonry

Gable with chisel masonry

Chisel masonry is a type of ornamental masonry used on triangular gables in East Frisia .

The chisel masonry consists of bricked triangles, which are arranged at right angles to the slope of the verge. The rows of isosceles triangles therefore meet the normal horizontal bed joints at an angle. Chisel masonry was used from around the 15th to the end of the 19th century and, in addition to structuring and decorating the gable, served to protect the verge against ingress of water.
