The verge denotes the lateral end of the roof surface on the vertical gable .

The verge connects the end of the eaves with that of the roof ridge . It does not intersect with any other sloping roof and is called the forehead of the house. It is often provided with special jewelry .

The cornice following the verge is called the gable cornice or verge cornice. In Greek and Roman temple construction it is also referred to as oblique geison .

In mining, the verge denotes the rock wall at the end of the tunnel where mining is to continue.

Word origin

The term verge is made up of the Germanic word place for point, edge or corner and the term passage in the sense of walking. The verge describes the "end of accessibility" at the edge of the roof or at the gable edge.
