qualification

Germany met Scotland, Austria and Cyprus. After arduous victories against Austria and 1-0 in Cyprus, Scotland was the main rival with star striker Denis Law . On April 16, 1969, the German team played in Glasgow and fought 1-1. Gerd Müller had put the Germans in the lead in the first half, Murdoch was able to equalize in the 85th minute. The decision had to bring the second leg in Hamburg.

On the rainy October 22, 1969, the Scots took the lead after just three minutes through Johnstone. Klaus Fichtel from FC Schalke 04 was able to equalize before half-time. After Gerd Müller took the lead for the German team in the second half, the Scots still didn't give up and fought for an equalizer through Gilzean. Stan Libuda finally brought the decision in the 79th minute and Germany went to the World Cup in Mexico.

Gerd Müller scored nine of the 20 German goals in qualification. The FC Bayern Munich player scored at least one goal in all six group matches. Most of Germany's players were playing for Bayern at the time. Four players had 17 appeals in the qualifying games. This was followed by 1. FC Köln, Eintracht Braunschweig, Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach, each with eight assignments.

In the third group game, which took place again in Leon, it was a matter of group victory against Peru. They defeated Bulgaria 3-2 and Morocco 3-0. The winner would be group winners and should also play in the quarter-finals in Leon, a draw would have been drawn. Germany had the same starting line-up as they did against Bulgaria and were focused right from the start. Gerd Müller then decided the game with three goals within 19 minutes of crosses from Libuda, Löhr and Seeler. In the 43rd minute, the young Peruvian star striker Cubillas scored the connecting goal with a deflected free kick. In the second half, both of them worked out various chances, but the strikers repeatedly failed because of the opposing goalkeepers or missed the goal.

Game for third place

Germany secured third place with a narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay. The Uruguayans were the stronger team, but failed because of Horst Wolter, who was given the chance to prove himself by Helmut Schön. In addition, the team had to do without Franz Beckenbauer, who had dislocated his shoulder in the semi-final against Italy.
