Bela Duarte

Bela Duarte (born before 1974 in São Vicente ) is a Cape Verdean painter.

Life

She was born on the island of São Vicente and studied decorative arts in Lisbon . After the Portuguese Carnation Revolution , she returned to Cape Verde in 1974 and founded the "Cooperativa da Resistência" in Mindelo , together with Manuel Figueira and Luisa Queiros. The common ethnographic research on weaving and handicrafts on the different islands of Cape Verde, she sees today as a great personal enrichment for identification with her country. At the "Centro Nacional de Artensanato" she taught dyeing, tapestry and batik.

Bela Duarte produces a wide variety of works: paintings in oil and acrylic, batik pictures, weaving and tapestries. In 1992, together with Luisa Queirós, she founded the gallery "azul + azul = verde" in Mindelo for batik, handicrafts and painting.

Since the 1970s, Bela Duarte has successfully participated in numerous joint exhibitions in Cape Verde, Brussels, Portugal, Paris and the USA. In 1995 she received the prestigious "Fonte Lima Prize" from the national cultural institute for her batik work
