The siege of Dunkirk in World War II by Canadian and Czechoslovak troops from October 1944 was not a priority goal for the Allies after Ostend was conquered and the port there opened for supply purposes from the end of September 1944.

During an armistice from October 3 to 6, 1944, on the initiative of the French Red Cross , 17,500 French civilians as well as Allied and German wounded were evacuated from Dunkirk .

The German units under Vice Admiral Friedrich Frisius surrendered to Brigadier General Alois Liška , commander of the Czechoslovak Brigade , one day after the surrender of the German Reich on May 9, 1945 without any further conditions.
