history

When the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway built a railway line through Pecos County, the Davenport Irrigation and Land Associates Company planned to build a location on the railway line southeast of Fort Stockton. In the spring of 1913 the plans were presented to the public and the place was named after A. N. Belding, the director of the railway company. An infrastructure for a local supply center with a market square, hotel, shops, etc. was planned. In the same year the railway line reached Belding and a hotel was built. All attempts to develop Belding as a place failed because of the lack of water resources. Irrigation of agricultural areas was only possible with complex pumping systems, so that the products of the farms were hardly competitive. Eventually the expansion plans were abandoned and the hotel was demolished, leaving only a few farms in the area. The remaining farms are now along the Old Alpine Highway and Farm Road 2037.
