history

The company was founded in Monroe , North Carolina in 1888 by William Henry Belk. Belk first named his company New York Racket after his brother John Belk joined the company and named their joint venture Belk Brothers. 20 years after it was founded, the two brothers moved their headquarters to nearby Charlotte and opened a department store on Trade and Tryon Streets in the city center.

In the 1950s, John and Tom Belk, the sons of company founder William Henry Belk, took over the management. They continued the expansion of the department store chain and opened branches in other cities and in shopping centers.

100 years after Belk was founded, the branch network already consisted of more than 300 department stores in 16 states.

In 2004 Tim Belk became managing director and his brothers Johnny Belk and McKay Belk also occupied management positions. Since then, several competitors such as Proffitt's, McRae's and Parisian have been taken over and integrated into the company.
