The Bellevue Oak is a natural monument in the Berlin district of Köpenick in the Treptow-Köpenick district .

history

The Bellevue oak is an approx. 270 year old English oak in the south-western area of Bellevue Park . It was probably planted in 1752 and is a relic of what was once a larger oak population in the park. According to current data (as of May 9, 2017) from the Treptow-Köpenick district office , the tree has a trunk circumference of 5.65 meters, a height of 22 meters and a crown diameter of 29 meters. It has been registered as a natural monument since 1993. The main branch was even secured with a support structure in 2006. In 2012, tree pruning work was carried out on the Bellevue oak, while the investigation found that several strong branches had died in the upper crown and deadwood was formed further down. The interventions were made for safety reasons, otherwise the tree would have had to be felled.

In 2014 tree experts climbed into the crown of the oak with an aerial work platform and removed the dead branches, removing around 40 percent of the crown. The impressive trail of branches of the natural monument, which has been secured by supports since 2006, was not reduced. All of these measures taken on the tree were unsuccessful. There are brown leaves on the tree from the previous year. The Bellevue oak should not be felled for the time being, because the district was looking at how to keep it alive. At the time, the tree posed no danger to walkers in the park, said tree inspector Olga Toepfer. In 2015 there was an extensive coordination with the district monument authority, nature conservation associations and the legal office. The decision was made that the old oak should be cordoned off with a fence.
