History and layout

In 1719, Prince-Bishop Damian Hugo Philipp von Schönborn-Buchheim decided to move his residence from Speyer to Bruchsal.

After the construction of the baroque Bruchsal Castle in the valley, Prince Bishop Franz Christoph von Hutten zum Stolzenberg had a water reservoir built on the Steinsberg, a hill above the castle area, to supply the fountains in the castle garden and in the urban area. He had a pleasure palace built over the reservoir, to which a shooting house was added between 1756 and 1761. Because of the beautiful view of the city, the Bruchsalers called this shooting house Belvedere after a while . The castle is surrounded by a 3 hectare park with old trees. Today the “reserve building”, which is used by the Schönborn-Gymnasium , stands on the site of the reservoir .

Between 2001 and 2003 the Belvedere was completely renovated. B. used by the Bruchsal amateur theater Koralle as a performance location. Sometimes there are also outdoor school lessons.
