Benedetto Antelami

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benedetto Antelami was an Italian sculptor and is one of the few artists of the Romanesque era who are known by name .

Life

All that is clear from his life is that he worked in Parma from 1178 until shortly after 1200 and must have known the architecture and sculpture of southern France very well, but was also familiar with antiquity.

His most important works include the bishop's throne in the cathedral of Parma , the facade of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Parma, which he built in 1196, and the facade sculptures of the cathedral of Borgo San Donnino near Parma, which he began in 1198.

He had a lasting influence on Romanesque sculpture in Italy.
