Courtyard of Engelberg Monastery in Engelberg

The Benediktusweg is a 21-kilometer historical high-altitude hiking and pilgrimage route between Engelberg in the Swiss canton of Obwalden and Niederrickenbach in the canton of Nidwalden on the eastern slopes of the Engelberg Valley .

The Benediktusweg has historical significance as a connection between the Benedictine monastery Engelberg and the Benedictine monastery Maria-Rickenbach in the pilgrimage town of Niederrickenbach. The abbot of Engelberg was a visitor to the monastery founded in Niederrickenbach in 1857.

Directions

The route leads with steep intermediate climbs halfway up the eastern side of the valley to the Ristis and the Rosenbold viewpoint . From there, the view extends down to the Engelberger Aa and the Urner Alps .

From Rosenbold there is a longer descent to Oberrickenbach , the lowest point of the Benediktusweg. In the further course the path climbs again and crosses the points Brändlen and Hütti and after another descent reaches the pilgrimage site Niederrickenbach, which is a place of power for many believers .
