Benjamín Mendoza y Amor Flores (born March 31, 1933 - August 2, 2014 ) was a Bolivian painter of surrealism who committed an assassination attempt on Pope Paul VI in 1970 . committed that failed.
Assassination attempt on the Pope
Paul VI was the first Pope to go on an apostolic trip to the Philippines . On November 27, 1970 at around 9:30 a.m. local time, Mendoza, disguised as a priest , approached the Pope at Manila Airport in a tightly packed crowd with a crucifix and a knife over 30 cm long. Then he stabbed Paul VI twice. a, but was overwhelmed by the Pope's personal secretary, Pasquale Macchi . The Pope suffered minor injuries in the neck area. Thanks to a stiff support collar, which he wore for health reasons, serious injuries could be prevented. Mendoza y Amor Flores was then arrested. He was later sentenced to several years in prison.
Mendoza left La Paz , Bolivia , in 1962 . From 1962 to 1970 he lived in Argentina , the United States , Japan , Hong Kong and the Philippines.
