Bennachie , pronounced Ben-a-Hie , is the north-easternmost mountain in Aberdeenshire , Scotland . A few kilometers to the northeast is Mormond Hill , which, at 234 m, is much lower and is therefore also referred to as a hill in English. The ridge runs roughly in an east-west direction and has several peaks, the highest of which, the Oxen Craig , measures 528 meters. Far better known, however, is the secondary summit of Mither Tap at 518 m, the striking peak of which stands on the western edge of the mountain and towers over the hilly area below by around 350 m. On top of it there is an Iron Age defense system, from which one has a good view of the terrain to the north and east. It is traditionally claimed that Bennachie was Mons Graupius from the battle of Mons Graupius , but there is no evidence of this.
The mountain, with its slight ascent to the summit, is a popular destination for hikers due to its proximity to Aberdeen .
