Observation sheet for recording language proficiency

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BESK 4–5 (= observation sheet for recording language skills ) is a language-oriented observation instrument used by educators in Austria over an observation period of four weeks in kindergarten 15 months before the start of school to determine the language proficiency in German of children between the ages of four and five is used.

construction

The observation sheet BESK 4-5 was developed by BIFIE on behalf of the BMUKK . BESK consists of four parts (A picture book, B picture cards, C movement space and D conversations) and comprises fifteen criteria. In Sections A – C, the German language skills of the respective child are assessed on the basis of (partially) standardized observation. The observations take place with the help of the picture cards ( language treasure pirates ) or picture books ( Grandpa Henry seeks happiness ) developed for the language proficiency test in specific, given situations. In section D, the criteria are systematically observed during conversations in everyday kindergarten life (cf. Breit / Schneider, 2008a, b):

Part A (picture book)

  • Understanding W-questions and answering them appropriately (lexicon / semantics)
  • Bowing (morphology)
  • Second position of the finite verb (syntax)
  • Verb lexicon (lexicon / semantics)

Part B (picture cards)

  • Plural formation (morphology)
  • General and sub-terms (lexicon / semantics)
  • Initial differentiation (phonology)

Part C (movement space)

  • Understand space prepositions (lexicon / semantics)

Part D (conversations)

  • Perfect formation (syntax)
  • Article: Use of the mandatory article (syntax)
  • Article: Identification of the grammatical gender of nouns (morphology)
  • Asking decision-making questions (syntax)
  • Express needs and intentions (pragmatics / discourse)
  • Narratives (pragmatics / discourse)
  • Calls for action (pragmatics / discourse)

evaluation

The fifteen observation criteria are assigned to five linguistic competence areas (lexicon / semantics, pragmatics / discourse, phonology, morphology, syntax) and highlighted in color on the observation sheet. For each criterion, the observer chooses between a three-level closed response categorization, which corresponds to a point gradation of 2, 1 or 0. After completing the observations, the result of each criterion is transferred to the evaluation profile at the end of the observation sheet and a total value is calculated. The evaluation profile provides information about the strengths and weaknesses of a child's German-language skills, the total value determines the need for support measures in the German-language area. Children with a point value of 20 or below have special needs, children who achieve more than 20 points have no special need for language development in German (cf. Breit / Schneider, 2008b).

quality control

A revision of the instrument and the BESK manual on the basis of evaluation, reports and feedback as well as precise coordination with a version of BESK-DaZ revised on the basis of statements and feedback is planned for 2010. The use of the revised instruments BESK (sheet and manual) and BESK-DaZ (sheet and manual) is expected to be possible from spring 2011.
