Call for donations from Aleko Konstantinow to build the mountain hut in Blagoevgrad; then Gorna Dschumaja (1933)

The mountain hut "Makedonija" ( Bulgarian хижа "Македония" ; abbreviated: х. Македония) is a mountain hut in the south-west part of the Rila Mountains, which in turn is located in south-west Bulgaria .

The mountain hut is located at 2166 meters in the Mechit prochod area and has a capacity of 40 beds (including a dormitory with 24 bunk beds). The building is a massive, two-story structure that was erected in 1937. The mountain hut "Makedonija" is a waypoint on the European long-distance hiking trail E4 .

The hut is located below the pass between the peaks Goljam Metschi wrach (Bulgarian Голям Мечи връх ) and Malak Metschi wrach (Bulgarian Малък Мечи връх ) - in English roughly: Big or Small Bear Passage . Until 1980 the peaks bore the Turkish name “ Ajgidnik ” (Bulgarian Ай-гидик ; ayi = bear; gedik = passage), that was the Turkish name for Metschit prochod . However, the word Ai could also have its origin in the Thracian word Ai for heaven or section of heaven .

The mountain hut, originally built under the name “Makedonija”, was renamed “Stanoj Kremanski” ( Bulgarian Станой Крекмански ) after the communists came to power (after September 9, 1944 ) , after a partisan detachment that fought in this region ( partisan movement in Bulgaria ).
