Mining settlement (municipality of Höflein an der Hohen Wand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bergknappensiedlung is a settlement in the municipality of Höflein on the Hohe Wand in Lower Austria and is located within the local association of Oberhöflein one kilometer outside between Oberhöflein and Rothengrub on the southern slope of the Kienberg. The settlement was built at the end of the 19th century for workers from the Höfleiner coal mining and the downstream briquette factory and was expanded after the Second World War. The coal mining operation closed in 1967. The settlement consists of several apartment blocks in three rows on a hillside, which were last renovated in the 2000s. Thanks to the good infrastructure connection, the settlement was expanded all around by numerous single-family houses.
