history

The printer, publisher and bookseller Johann Jacob Korn (1702–1756) founded a publishing company in 1732 and opened a bookstore in Breslau in 1732, where he published a. a. scientific works. On October 22, 1741, Korn received the newspaper privilege from the Prussian king and later sovereign and supreme duke of Silesia, Frederick II of Prussia, and founded the Privileged Silesian State, War and Peace Newspaper , later the Schlesische Zeitung , which first appeared on January 3 Published in 1742. He was also active for the Prussian king. The edicts, ordinances, patents and regulations issued by Friedrich II, which affected the Duchy of Silesia, were printed by the Korn publishing house.

After the death of his father (1756) Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn (1739–1806 ) took over the company from his father in 1762 and called it Verlag Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn . In addition to German-language publications, this began to publish literature in Polish for the market in Poland and in other languages of Eastern Europe. In 1790 his son Johann Gottlieb Korn took over the company.

On April 1, 1914, Bergstadtverlag Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn was established as a sub-division after the writer Paul Keller (1873–1932) switched to the Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn publishing house with his magazine “Die Bergstadt”.

After the expulsion of the Germans from Silesia after 1945, but probably before the confiscation of the property of the publishing house (including its printing works) in Wroclaw by the Polish state in September 1949, the publishing house settled under the direction of Joachim Friedrich Konrad Zeuschner (1904– 1979) first settled in Gera, then (from around 1950) in Munich. Only the “Bergstadtverlag” section of the Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn publishing house was continued. In 1974 JFK Zeuschner acquired the publishing house from the Bergmann-Korn community of heirs and continued to run it as the sole owner until his death in 1979.

On January 1st, 1980 the Bergstadtverlag was taken over by the “Stiftung Kulturwerk Schlesien” (based in Würzburg). On January 1, 2010, the publishing house was sold again by the foundation.

Today the Bergstadtverlag is located in Görlitz and mainly publishes literary and cultural-historical books, travel books and photo books.
