The Berlengas are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal near Peniche . They consist of the three island groups of Berlenga Grande , the Farilhões and Estelas .
The largest of all islands is Berlenga Grande (or Ilha da Berlenga), it is the only one that is partially inhabited. In ancient times it was called Londobris by Claudius Ptolemy . The archipelago is a nature reserve of great tourist importance for the nearby city of Peniche.
The waters around the Berlenga Islands, which are only inhabited by around 50 people, are popular diving areas . The main island has bizarre rock formations as well as bays and grottos. Below the lighthouse is the Forte de São João Baptista das Berlengas. In 2019, after successfully combating invasive species, the islands were visited by the Madeira wave runner as a breeding ground for the first time in decades. A chick was found in March 2019.
