The Berliner Platz is located in the city center of Osnabrück on Wallring the crosses here as Erich Maria Remarque-Ring and Goethering with the crossing Wittekindstraße. In the past the square was called Schillerplatz, in the future it could be called Helmut-Kohl-Platz. As the meeting point of several streets that are important for urban traffic, it is one of the most important intersections in the city.

Berliner Platz is located in the northern Wallring at the meeting point of the border between the medieval old and new town. To the north of the square runs the border between the city ​​center , to which the square belongs, and the Gartlage district . While Wittekindstrasse leads south to Neumarkt , north of the square is the street of the same name, which runs into the Gartlage and then continues into the Schinkel .

Development

Berliner Platz has only one postal address, but buildings such as the headquarters of the Sparkasse Osnabrück or the headquarters of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung are grouped around the square . The first Osnabrück train station is also located on the adjoining Wittekindplatz. Formerly other buildings on the square were not rebuilt after the destruction in the war. There are currently plans to upgrade the square by developing the open space and renovating and expanding the existing building stock.

The square itself is one of the city's most important intersections.

history

Berliner Platz got its name in 1961 shortly after the construction of the Berlin Wall as a declaration of solidarity by the city of Osnabrück to the citizens of the now divided city of Berlin. Before it was renamed Berliner Platz, it was called Schillerplatz.

From 1940 to 1943 the Gestapo used the Hotel Schaumburg , which was formerly located here on the square , before using the cellar of Osnabrück Castle .

After the death of Helmut Kohl, the CDU city faction suggested that the square be renamed Helmut-Kohl-Platz. As a result, the city's cultural committee dealt with the topic on April 14, 2018.

The residents of the only building addressed at the square are against renaming. Although a majority in the city council was in favor of renaming the square, the residents of the building shy away from renaming as it is associated with costs and effort. She and other Osnabrück citizens expressed their skepticism about naming the square after Helmut Kohl due to the donation affair and other mistakes. The city’s Junge Union would like to rename the square against the will of the residents if necessary.
