The Berlin street is the main east-west transport connection in Offenbach am Main , replacing in this function, the Frankfurter Straße .
course
Berliner Straße begins at the intersection of Karlstraße / Bieberer Straße in Mathildenviertel and leads west through the entire city center, past the town hall, City Tower and Büsing-Park over Kaiserstraße . In the further course, past the area of the former local train station and the City Center Offenbach with the Cinemaxx, it flows into the Strahlberger Kreisel (generally called Kaiserlei-Kreisel in Offenbach ) in the Kaiserlei district .
history
The road was only laid out from 1955 and runs between Strahlberger Kreisel and Kaiserstraße on the route of the former Frankfurt-Offenbacher local railway . Therefore, not all historicist houses face the street, some end with a fire wall. Offenbach's local train station, which was demolished after the local railway line was closed in 1955, stretched near the intersection of Berliner Straße / Kaiserstraße in the area of the former parking deck on Bahnhofstraße and Karl-Carstens-Platz. Today only the name of the neighboring Bahnhofstrasse reminds of the local train station.
In the 1960s, the road was expanded with structurally separate double lanes in each direction, whereby the intersections were retained. The street section between Kaiserstraße and Karlstraße was laid as a new street breakthrough through the former old town, for which the remaining old building fabric was partly sacrificed. At Karlstrasse, Berliner Strasse joins Mathildenstrasse, which continues as the main thoroughfare to the eastern edge of the city center.
From 1987 the open excavation of the City-Tunnel-Offenbach of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main began . There were three stations below Berliner Straße: Kaiserlei, Leather Museum and Marktplatz. After the S-Bahn construction was completed, the street was redesigned into an avenue in 1995. The previous site of the Glocken-Bäckerei Backfabrik was redeveloped with the City Center Offenbach , an office building with a row of shops, a supermarket, restaurants, a savings bank and the CineMaxx cinema.
The former district house near the market square was completely rebuilt after the district administration had moved to Dietzenbach in 2002, received a new facade and has served as a town house since 2005, in which various municipal offices are housed. Diagonally opposite, the building of the former Franz furniture store was demolished and the area rebuilt. The new buildings were designed by Novotny Mähner Assoziierte , the office that had previously also looked after the City Tower.
The complex of the former Union power plant near the Kaiserlei roundabout, consisting of two high-rise buildings with shared plinths, has been vacant since 2004. The conversion into an apartment building is planned starting at the end of 2015.
The building complex at the confluence with Luisenstrasse, in which the former insurance company DBV-Winterthur (now part of the AXA Group) had its headquarters (AXA employees moved to the nearby Haus der Wirtschaft in 2010), has also been vacant since 2010. The building complex, which has belonged to DIC Asset AG since 2007, is to be demolished and the site rebuilt.
