After attending the Leibnizschule Offenbach , Rosenheim first studied illustration from 1948 at the Werkkunstschule Offenbach (now the Hochschule für Gestaltung ), then at the Werkakademie Kassel art education, then in Frankfurt am Main at the Städelschule wall and glass painting. At the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and then at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen , he studied art history, history, archeology and philosophy until 1962. From 1956 to 1957, Bernd Rosenheim was in Rome on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service ; further trips took him through Europe, Asia and South America.

The first exhibition in Little Studio in New York was followed by solo and group exhibitions. Rosenheim's artistic work spans painting, sculpture, graphics and mixed forms, for example three-dimensional, painted wall objects with mirrors. Since the 1960s, glass paintings (for example the cemetery chapel in Offenbach-Bieber , 1963, Gethsemane Church Frankfurt, 1971), metal sculptures (“Flamme”, Offenbach Town Hall, 1971, “Phoenix”, formerly the Wiesbaden main post office) have been commissioned as major public contracts , 1975, today DBV-Winterthur-Haus, "Schneckenbrunnen", in front of the former citizens' hall in Dreieich- Buchschlag , 1980) and wood ("Unknown Goddess", Offenbach Town Hall, 1992). Various phases can be observed both in the sculptural and in the painterly work, which lead from the expressionistically broken figure through geometric and gestural-reduced abstractions back to the figure.

On his travels to East Asia, Rosenheim made pencil drawings of sculptures in caves and temples that were difficult to photograph. He published this research in 2006 in the book Die Welt des Buddha. Early sites of Buddhist art in India and in the ten-part television series "Die Welt des Buddha" for Hessischer Rundfunk, 1983.

In 1993 the artist founded the Bernd Rosenheim Foundation, the purpose of which is to promote contemporary art. The Rosenheim Museum , supported by the foundation, was opened in Offenbach am Main in April 2008 and closed again in May 2011 due to a lack of funds.

Bernd Rosenheim lives and works in Ireland and Switzerland.
