The Berlin Islands are a group of islands in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They consist of two small islands and some surrounding rocks. The archipelago is located west of King George Island , a few hundred meters off the Fildes Peninsula . The Berlin Islands are thus located in the Argentine , British and Chilean Antarctic Territories . However, these territorial claims have been suspended since the Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1961.
In 1984 the archipelago was mapped and named by a German expedition of scientists from the universities of Heidelberg , Karlsruhe and Berlin .
