Bernard III (Besalú)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernard III ( Catalan Bernat ; † 1111 ) was a Count of Besalú from the House of Barcelona . He was a son of Count Wilhelm II and the Estefanía of Provence.

When his father died around 1066, Bernard was still under the age of majority, which is why his uncle Bernard II took over the county, with which he ruled together until his death around 1097. Bernard married on October 1, 1107 a daughter of Count Raimund Berengar III. from Barcelona , who through her mother was a granddaughter of the famous Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar ("El Cid") . She was given the county of Osona as a dowry in the marriage. Already on October 10, 1107 he determined his father-in-law to be the contingent heir of the county of Besalú including the landscapes of Vallespir , Fenouillèdes and Peyrepertuse , provided that no children of his own should arise from his marriage. With that he passed over the possible inheritance rights of his sister Estefanía and her husband, Count Roger II of Foix .

In 1111, Bernard actually died childless, with which the count family of Besalú died out and their property became that of the counts of Barcelona .
