Julia Willand (born June 4, 1972 in Nuremberg ) is a former South African beach volleyball player of German origin who used to be active in volleyball .

Career

Willand came to South Africa with her family at the age of six and attended the German school in Johannesburg . At the age of 14 she began her volleyball career on the school team. She took part in a national junior championship in 1989 with a selection from the province of Transvaal and was appointed to the South African national junior team. Willand continued her training in Germany in the 1990s. From 1991 to 1996 she played with USC Freiburg and DJK Freiburg . Then she was active in the capital for VfK Berlin and TSV Spandau in 1860 . In 2000 Willand returned to South Africa. There she played for Western Province SAP . The club won the national championship in 2001 and 2002. With the senior team Willand took part in the 2001 African Cup of Nations in Port Harcourt .

During this time Willand had also played a few smaller beach volleyball tournaments. In 2002 she decided to play in the sand and formed a duo with Leigh-Ann Naidoo , whom she knew from the national indoor team. In the following year Naidoo / Willand played their first open tournaments and grand slams of the FIVB World Tour . At the Bali Open they reached the top ten for the first time in ninth place. They also qualified for the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro . There they won their opening game against Claasen / Deister and reached the first main round, level on points with the Germans as third party, in which they had to admit defeat to the US duo Reynolds / DeNecochea . In 2004, the 25th place at the Rhodes Open was her best result on the World Tour. Their greatest success came when they qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens . They were the first African beach volleyball duo to take part in an Olympic tournament. However, they could not win a set in their group and were therefore eliminated after the preliminary round.

Professional career

Willand studied in Freiburg and Berlin law . After completing her studies, she worked for a consulting firm in Cape Town on the subject of immigration , before setting up a corresponding company herself in 2005. She also works for the South African Immigration Service.
