Bernardo Lacasia

Bernardo Lacasia (* 1905 in France , † 1952 ) was one of the pioneers of Chilean jazz music .

Born in the French Pyrenees to Spanish parents, he came to Chile when he was two years old. He studied music here at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música . From 1919 he was active as a professional musician.

In the 1920s he directed various jazz orchestras in Santiago de Chile and Talca. In 1938 he founded the Orchestra Lacasia , which u. a. the saxophonist Mario Escobar belonged to. The group performed at the Tac Room Ritz in Santiago and was particularly popular with the city's bohemians.

In addition, Lacasio was active in the Sindicato Profesional Orquestral and organized the first musicians' congress in Chile in 1940. At the same time he also appeared with an orchestra on the radio station Radio Hucke (later Radio Nuevo Mundo ).
