Bernat Joan i Marí (* 22. February 1960 in Sant Jordi, Ibiza ) is a Spanish university professor, writer and politician ( ERC ) and was from 2004 to 2007 Member of the European Parliament ( Group of the Greens / EFA ).

Joan i Marí holds a PhD in Catalan Philosophy and is Professor of Catalan Language and Literature. He has published short stories and novels as well as dramatic texts as well as numerous sociolinguistic essays, especially on the subject of language and nation. He also pursued a political career in the Catalan left-wing nationalist party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC). 1993-1996 he was its vice-president, later chairman of the regional association of the party in the Balearic Islands .

In the 2004 European elections , Bernat Joan was the top candidate of the ERC-led party alliance Europa de los Pueblos (Europe of the Peoples). He moved into the European Parliament , where he joined the Greens / EFA group, since the ERC is part of the European Free Alliance , a Europe-wide alliance of regional parties . He was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and was an alternate member of the Committee on Development .

In December 2006, Joan was involved in the fictional report Bye Bye Belgium , which announced an alleged secession of the Flemish part of the country on Belgian television. In it Joan congratulated the Flemish people on their alleged independence.

In June 2007, Joan resigned from the European Parliament, leaving his seat to Mikel Irujo from the Basque left-wing regionalist Eusko Alkartasuna (EA) party, who had taken second place on the Europa de los Pueblos list .
